What is a Voluntary Agreement?
When an establishment seeks a new ABC license or modification to its existing license, the license may be protested by area residents or citizens associations. A Voluntary Agreement is a written compromise between the ABC licensee and the protestants that is created before the parties appear for a Protest hearing. A Voluntary Agreement may cover a specific business practice or a wide range of business operations. After being approved by the ABC Board, the Voluntary Agreement becomes part of the ABC license and remains in effect for the life of the license.
How do I find out if a particular establishment has a Voluntary Agreement?
Some Voluntary Agreements are available online on the ABRA website under Board Orders. If you need additional information, contact Bill Hager at (202) 442-4425 or William.Hager@dc.gov.
